Gimpville was approached by Motion Blur last October and asked to help produce a pitch for the country postcards. Motion Blur and Gimpville won the pitch and a few weeks later Motion Blur got to produce the grand final opening sequence. Both productions was directed by Roenberg.
Gimpville was involved from previs to final compositing. The opening sequence features set extensions, cg sets, mattepaintings and advanced particle simulations.
The country postcards sequence features 40 000 light spheres flocking above the audience. The spheres form the country flags, maps and a canvas. All flocking animation and simulation where done in Side Effects Houdini. We created a complex procedural setup which was linked to external eps and bitmap files containing the flags og maps to create 78 postcards all together. All postcards was exported from two(one for the final and on for the semi finals) Houdini scripts using python programming. The exported files was then parsed to binary files which Viz Artist could read using a custom plug-in written by Vizrts R&D department specifically for this project. In total we exported over 1.500.000.000 lights and 23 minutes of advanced particle simulations. The graphics is rendered real time using Viz Engine.
